The BatBotS, a cheeky acronym for The Band at the Bottom of the Sea, is a collection of friends brought together by their communal love of music, humour, and storytelling.
The joy and wonder on display in a BatBotS concert has been described as a combination of “Robert Munsch meets the Barenaked Ladies” while paying homage to the music of Ireland and the sounds of Canada’s East Coast.
They make songs about the little moments, about dreams and wishes, about harsh realities, about love and lovely places, about the simplicity of life (in all its complexity). Duncan Cox, the lead singer/composer, calls it “smiling music”, which he believes the world could always use a little more of. Music has the capability to make you feel things you never thought you could, and the BatBotS believe in harvesting that power and implementing it to its most generous extent.
Originally assembled as a pit band for a few new musicals, The BatBotS place a special value on the ability music has to paint and colour a world through individual songs or entire musical experiences.
The band first came to be in 2021 to workshop songs from a new musical and all quickly fell in love with the way each other's talents and personalities played so perfectly off one another. The creative and professional background of the members varied: a pair of actors, a steadily gigging musician, a musical director, and a symphony member. The different backgrounds served as means of integrating worlds and creating a sound that pulls the best from each arena.
They proceeded to work together in a similar capacity each subsequent year: doing a staged reading in 2022, then assembling as the pit band for the musical Afterlight in 2023, and then again as the band for the musical End of the Line in 2024. That autumn saw them put on a two-act concert at the Gargoyle Theatre to premiere and play down the seven-track album for an abridged version of Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet titled Hamlet: A Modern Player's Guide. The concert was recorded live off the floor and is available for listening on streaming services now.
Duncan, Paul, Matt, Josh, and Brendan love making music with each other and can’t wait to share it with you.
